Any time you are talking about putting your dog under anesthesia you are taking a risk, especially with an older dog, however, all dogs should have their teeth inspected by a Veterinarian at lease once a year. Many animals including dogs are prone to dental problems and need to be monitored carefully for signs of periodontal disease.
An alternative to traditional methods of deep cleaning your pet’s teeth is the Non-Anesthetic method. Most Vets will recommend you avoid this non-licensed procedure. I hesitate to recommend this because there has been many reports of abuse. It is worth checking into but with caution. Expressing your dogs anal glans
One of the most overlooked yet necessary dog grooming steps is the expressing of the anal glans. It’s a dirty job, but someone needs to do it. Every dog has two small sacks in the anal region that contain small amounts of fluid. This fluid should be expressed on a regular basis to avoid an impaction or infection. It sounds gross but in reality it’s a quick and easy procedure that can be done in the tub before the bath. Watch this quick video for instructions on how to express your dog’s anal glans. Thunder Storms and Dogs
It was another 2am thunder storm and another 2am barking session from Bonkers, and it wasn’t long before I heard him scratching at my bedroom door.
I’m really not sure if its the sound of thunder or the change in air pressure during a storm that sets a dog on edge, but Bonkers is not the only dog that feels the need to bark out a warning when a storm is on the way. Fortunately, Bonkers has been taught to use his “inside” bark which sounds kinda like a whisper bark. It’s enough to wake me up without waking up the neighbors.
So what do I do to calm down a concerned sentry? I first get my patootie up out of bed, let him know that “momma dog” has gotten the message and will take over, and then I give him a bully stick to keep him occupied. Nothing like a bully stick to take a dog’s mind off a problem.
There is no sense in yelling at a dog that is only doing his job. In our pack, I’m the alpha dog and it’s Bonkers job to alert the alpha dog of any impending danger. Once I have acknowledged that I’m on it, he can relax and wait for my instructions. I give him the bully stick to let him know there is no danger and it’s safe to chill out.
Sushi, the pug and Bonkers, the Shih Tzu do the happy dance…
After learning that dogs everywhere have risen up and proclaimed “cats do not taste like chicken”, Sushi and Bonkers were seen rejoicing at a local disco. It has been a long hard month of campaigning but according to Sushi, “It has all been worth it”. “Cats everywhere can now rest easy”.
“We are not done yet”, proclaimed Bonkers. “We still need to insure that humans provide a tasty all natural dog treat, like bully sticks to replace the cat fur normally in a dog’s diet”.

Teaching your Puppies not to bite
Puppies love to chew and will naturally love to chew on you. Teaching your puppy that even though you are delicious, you are not a giant bully stick can be a difficult task and requires diligence and repetition.
The technique is simple and is modeled after normal puppy behaviors.
Little Dogs - Big Treats
My little dog loves his treats in the large economy size. One giant bully stick can keep him busy for hours.
Of course, I don’t let him finish the whole bully stick in one sitting but he is always happy to get his half chewed bully back the next day.

Training your Dog to use the Litter Box
Teaching your dog to use a litter box is a lot easier than you might think. Dogs naturally like to relieve themselves in the same spot and are motivated by scent. These two factors are great motivators for your dog to choose a litter box.
My dog has used puppy piddle pads since the first night we brought him home. The pads have a scent that attracted him to them. It was only natural to get him to step up to the litter box. All it took was a little encouragement and a bully stick reward.
