Surf Dog Competition

Surf Dog

Got a dog that loves to surf?

You can join in on the competition at Coronado Beach for the annual  Loews Coronado Beach Surf Dog Championship.  Last year 60 dogs showed up to pound the waves.  The charity event benefits Modest Needs Foundation.

National and Local media will be there to cover the pooches hang 10’s or is that hang 20’s as the dogs take to the waves.

It never ceases to amaze me the things our favorite companions can do with the proper motivation.   I’m sure these surf pups will be earning their bully sticks at this event.

Take Your Pooch to Work

simplyhired.gif

Do you feel guilty leaving your beloved companion home alone all day while you slave away at work?  You’ve tried leaving on the radio or TV, leaving piles of toys and stacks of all natural dog treats but nothing seems to relieve the anxiety your dog feels when left behind.

Are you looking for a job where not only your skills and talents are appreciated, but where your company shares your love of animals.

SimplyHired.com will help you find companies that allow dogs to accompany their Pet Parents to work.

Now that’s a great idea.

Toxic Flea and Tick Medications

Toxic Flea and Tick Medications

fleacollar.jpgAre you poisoning your pet unknowingly?

Can that same poison make you sick?

Green Paws has recently done a study and listed the results on their site. Many of today’s most popular flea and tick medications can actually be doing more harm than good. You, your children and your pets could all be at risk.

Most of us pet owners have been so concerned about the poison in pet food and dog treats that we have missed the big issue of poison in pet flea collars and medication. Many of these meds can cause cancer in your dog or cat and we recommend that small children and pregnant women not be exposed to these poisons.

Check out http://www.greenpaws.org for the complete list.

The tragedy of dog drying cages

The tragedy of dog drying cages

bandryingcrate.jpgThomas Bruckner and girlfriend, Melissa Makarewicz learned too late the tragedy of their Puppy Grooming salons choice to use dog drying cages.   Their beloved pug-beagle mix, Bailey suffered heat stroke and died after be left in a drying cage for only 5 minutes at the Pampered Pooch Doggie Daycare and Spa in Hicksville, NY.

Many busy grooming salons use the drying cages as a fast way to dry a dog and in most cases there are no problems.  However, with a short snouted dog the forced heat into a closed cage can quickly become lethal.

Mr. Bruckner has started a website, BadGroomer.com in hopes of having the drying cages banned.

Most groomers want to keep the cages but require more education as to their proper use.

Hand drying a dog has many advantages over the drying cage as it requires the groomer to spend more time with each dog and can alert a groomer to potential skin problems or infection.

Many groomers will choose to use a cage with a “difficult” dog to avoid the conflict of dealing with an uncooperative pet.

Ask your groomer exactly what their policies are for drying and the use of drying cages, as well as how they deal with a “difficult” dog.  You may even want to take your dogs favorite all natural dog treat with you to the groomers as a special treat for good behavior or to get the dogs attention.

Mennonite Puppy Horrors

I was shocked when I saw this report on Nightline. The amount of suffering a dog must go through at these puppy mills is just unfathomable.

The fact that a human could think it is moral and just to treat another living creature so cruelly mystifies me.

Are you stressing out your dog?

Are you stressing out your dog?

dog71.jpg

My dog, Bonkers, seems to always know when I’m sick or tired.  He will snuggle up to me as if to say “here Mom … pet me, it will make you feel better”…. and he’s right.  It does make me feel better.

Studies have shown that having a pet can reduce stress and help humans heal faster.

But what about our pets?  What kind of effect does our mood  or stress have on them?

With the economic stresses of today and the increased workload, more and more people are dealing with higher and higher levels of stress.  As our tempers grow short and our tone sharper, our pets are increasingly left confused, frightened and stressed.

Dogs especially take their sense of security from their human, Alpha Dog.  If we are agitated, they are agitated.  The constant stress can cause the same types of health issues in your pet that you may be experiencing.  Things like …eating problems, heart problems, depression and a number of even more serious illnesses.

Next time you come home full of anger at the traffic or the idiot at work, remember to hug and comfort your dog first.  Take time to walk your dog and give him a dog treat.  You will be amazed at much better you both will feel.

Sushi, the pug and Bonkers, the Shih Tzu do the happy dance…

After learning that dogs everywhere have risen up and proclaimed “cats do not taste like chicken”, Sushi and Bonkers were seen rejoicing at a local disco. It has been a long hard month of campaigning but according to Sushi, “It has all been worth it”. “Cats everywhere can now rest easy”.

“We are not done yet”, proclaimed Bonkers. “We still need to insure that humans provide a tasty all natural dog treat, like bully sticks to replace the cat fur normally in a dog’s diet”.

The Ultimate Dog Collar

It’s your choice… Would you rather buy your pooch this dog collar, or feed the entire population of a starving Country for a year?

This dog collar is so expensive that you have to have an armed guard standing by just to get them to give you the actual price.

If you choose the collar over feeding the starving masses, how about asking your pooch this question…

If you could choose between this dog collar with the shiny rocks and some nice yummy dog chews, which would you choose.

My Guess is 10 out of 10 dogs would choose the dog chews.

Heartbreaking Story of 22 Dogs in a Car

Heartbreaking Story of 22 Dogs in a Car

The recent story from Grayson County, Texas of a woman living in her station wagon with 22 dogs is another example of how dogs are suffering because of the troubled economy.

The Papillions and Chihuahuas were placed in the custody of the Texas ASPCA by a Judge’s order. The healthy dogs will be put up for adoption.

The woman, who’s name was not released was homeless and had no where else to go.

I can’t imagine how difficult it must have been for both the woman and these 22 dogs. I also can’t imagine why the woman did not willingly turn the dogs over to a shelter or seek out homes, but because I don’t know the full circumstances it would be wrong for me to judge her.

I would like to encourage anyone that finds themselves in circumstances that makes it impossible to provide the basic necessities to their pets, to willingly give them up. I know it’s hard to give up a beloved dog, but their well-being should take precedence.

Every dog deserves, love, shelter, food and a dog bone now and then.

Heartbreaking story of dogs in Iraq

This news report breaks my heart.  It’s another case of how we, as humans, make dogs suffer.

It’s so senseless, there are other ways of controlling pet populations even in a war zone.

Makes me want to go hug my dog and cry.

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) — The shotgun blast rips into the stray dog’s midsection, sending it tumbling over and over. Agonizing yelps echo through the streets as it tries to reach and bite at the gaping wound. Minutes later, the dog is dead.

Stray dogs roam a Baghdad neighborhood in November 2008, when the culling program began.

A few miles away, a puppy eats a piece of poisoned meat. Its body starts to twitch and spasm as the toxins kick in. It dies within 15 minutes.

The two strays were among the thousands that roam the streets of Baghdad. Authorities have been killing them since November, trying to prevent the spread of disease and attacks on residents.
