The Dog New Year’s Resolutions
This year my dog, Bonkers has made a list of New Years Resolutions that unlike past years he actually intends to keep. As a good “Dog Mom” I’m going to do my best to help him accomplish his goals.
Bonkers 2009 New Year’s Resolutions:
- Start eating Healthier - More all Natural Dog Treats
- Exercise - More brisk walking less sniffing bushes
- Better Dental Hygiene - Brushing teeth daily and more Bully sticks (Bonkers likes the Bully sticks…teeth brushing not so much.)
- More patience and tolerance of the cat - “Can’t we all just get along”.
- Stop licking the micro suede couch - (Please!)
- Take better care of appearance - (Can you say - BATH!)
- Dress Better (The torn up orange T-shirt has got to go)
- Use my “quiet” voice inside
- Stop eating Legos
- Give more hugs and kisses - Wag my tail more and be content with life.
The Dog Wisdom of the “Way of the Nick”
I recently came across this wonderful poem a Dad wrote about his son’s dog. It was written by Gord Young of Gord’s Gold.
I’m sure Nick lives a very full and happy life, filled with affection and plenty of bully sticks.
What can we learn from the way of the Nick?
A Nick does not pass judgement.
A true Nick forgives, even one who has lopped off his ear.
(Oops. my son accidently nicked his ear while trimming)
Nick is tolerant of others even though they would attack him for no reason.
(the cat)
Nick protects with his life those that he loves most.
Nick barks at raccoons but intends them no harm.
(Last night)
A true follower of the “way of the Nick” does not hold on to prejudices
nor hold grudges and forgives past indiscretions.
Nick is surely what we must strive to be.

Choosing the right Puppy
Your stocked up on puppy food, all natural dog treats and puppy training pads, the kids are excited to finally have convinced you, your spouse has reluctantly agreed, so off you go …. in search of the perfect puppy to join your family.
But wait! Before you rush off to the pet store, you need to do a bit of research and a lot more thinking. Ask yourself these questions.
- Do I want a rough and tumble active dog? or, a lap dog?
- Would my kids be too much for a little dog to handle?
- Big dog or little dog?
- Inside dog or outside dog?
- Do I need a dog that gets along well with other pets? Cats?
- Do I need a dog that’s protective? Or, one that will love everyone that comes to the house?
Take time to learn some of the Breed traits before making your choice. Once you’ve narrowed down the breed, it’s time to visit some breeders in search of the perfect puppy.
Dog Breeds - Shih Tzu
I love my Shih Tzu, but I must admit they are not known for their intelligence or their athletic ability. It’s their sparkling personality and good looks that make this breed so popular.
A word of warning if you’re considering a Shih Tzu, there is a lot of upkeep if you want that long flowing coat. On the plus side, they don’t shed which makes them ideal for allergy sufferers.
Shih Tzu’s love people and other animals, are known to be friendly with cats and kids, make wonderful companions for senior citizens and have been known to dance for all natural dog treats.
German Shepherd Tidbits
The German Shepherd is one of the most popular breeds used for Police, Rescue, and Service dogs. They are known for their superior intelligence, loyalty and bravery.
They are naturally protective of their families which is also why they are one of the top dogs in the bites and attacks categories.
Like all dogs… German Shepherds love Bully Sticks.
Really Smart Dogs
Check out these really smart and amazing dogs. Not only are they amazing but they seem to actually enjoy showing off their stuff.
The Dog that’s smart enough to stay out of the dirty pool.
Magpie, The dog that will do your math homework for a dog bone.
German Shepard drives a truck…
What would you think if you saw a German Shepherd dog driving your local mail truck? Check out the responses from these folks on the street as a German Shepherd appears to stop for directions to the local Pet store to pick up some dog bones, and then drives away in the mail truck.
German Shepherd’s are known for their intelligence and ability to learn difficult task, however driving without a license is still illegal.
Mean ole cat wins
A spoiled dog is an unhappy dog…
Dogs are happiest when they feel safe and secure with a dominant pack leader. That pack leader needs to be Y.O.U! It’s fine to show your dog attention and dole out the toys and dog chews, but only in the proper timing and environment.
This video shows what happens when a nervous insecure dog is in control.
